This
programme takes you on a 66 mile journey along one of the most scenic
and peaceful of all our canal routes. The Leicester Section of the Grand
Union runs from Norton junction near Watford Gap to Leicester, and takes
in the Welford Arm and Market Harborough Arm. There's plenty to interest
the canal boater, with three tunnels, two staircase flights of locks,
and the Inclined Plane at Foxton. Apart from the two major towns of Leicester
and Market Harborough, there are no other built up areas on this delightfully
tranquil passage through the heart of rural England. At Leicester, the
canal runs in to the river Soar, and brings a complete contrast for the
boater. A delightful meandering non-tidal river navigation, with attractive
water frontages, and the profusion of wild flowers and plants giving cover
to innumerable wildlife. The river gets deeper and wider as it winds its
way to the confluence with the River Trent at Redhill, near Nottingham.
