The Seven Wonders of the Waterways

  canal videos

The original idea for "Seven Wonders of the Waterways" was put forward in 1946 by Robert Aikman, co-founder of the Inland Waterways Association. Aikman's choice spanned over 100 years of engineering construction on our waterways system.
In 2002, British Waterways conducted a poll of the boating public to choose the Seven Wonders of the Waterways for the 21st Century. This programme reflects your selection quite closely. It spans over 200 years from the work of John Longbotham who built the Bingley Five Rise in 1774 right through to the exciting new Falkirk Wheel of 2002. In addition, it includes Rennie's Caen Hill Flight of 16 locks on the Kennet & Avon, Whitworth's Burnley Embankment, Telford's Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Outram and Telford's Standedge Tunnel and that great Victorian masterpiece, Leader-Williams' Anderton Boat Lift. Many of these wonderful structures have been the subject of major restorations during the millennium. There's something for every waterways enthusiast in this thoroughly researched and very detailed programme.

An ideal gift for anybody interested in our heritage.
