The South Oxford Canal

This fascinating programme explores every aspect of the South Oxford Canal.
You'll meet colourful characters,
visit picture postcard villages, and delve into local history and items of
interest. You'll be taken around Banbury, and
you'll be able to dip in to a guided walking tour of the City of Oxford itself,
taking a look right inside some of the colleges. But always, you'll keep coming
back to the boats as you meander through the richly varied Cotswold countryside
from Napton Junction to Oxford.
Built in the 18th century, this is a typical Brindley canal at it twists and
turns, slavishly following the contour lines. All part of its charm for us
today of course, but how the commercial boatmen must have cursed its
directionless curves. It formed part of the original "Grand Cross",
linking the great rivers of England and played an enormously important role in
the Industrial Revolution. As a main transport artery it carried coal and
manufactured goods from the Midlands to Oxford, and via the Thames to
London.
